Secret denunciation in the Republic of Venice, c1887. This story is probably based on an episode in the life of Doge Francesco Foscari (1373-1457), who was tricked by his enemies into believing that his son, exiled to Crete, had died. As a result, he abandoned his duties as ruler and was forced to resign in October 1457. He was deposed from office and died five days later.
