A prominent still-life painter, María Luisa de la Riva enjoyed considerable success not only in Spain but also in Paris, where she spent a significant part of her professional career. Beyond her characteristic way of depicting fruit at its ripest, the painter imbued her still lifes with a unique expressiveness. Works created in Paris, such as this one, clearly reflect a Spanish influence, and it was with these pieces that she garnered her most prestigious awards. This painting was exhibited at the 1900 Universal Exposition in Paris, where it was awarded a second-class medal.
