Vase of Lilacs, 1890. Fernanda Francés y Arribas, daughter of the Alicante painter Plácido Francés, does not appear to have attended any formal art school to complete her education, unlike her brother Juan. It is likely that she learned from her father, who had as many as eight female pupils. She participated in several public exhibitions from 1881 onwards, often with success. In 1887 she received an honourable mention, and in 1890 a third-place medal for this painting, Vase of Lilacs, which was acquired by the State. The artist has included her signature on the folded banknote visible on the table.
