Witiza, Visigothic king, c1853. In the year 700, Witiza (died 719) was appointed king of the Suebi in Galicia, establishing his royal seat in the city of Tuy. On his father Egica's death two years later, he succeeded him as sole king of the Visigoths. Although little is known of his reign, some anonymous chronicles mention that he brought peace and prosperity to his kingdom. He was a less belligerent ruler than his father, and he lifted the punishment imposed on those he had exiled, returning to them their property, slaves, and even positions in the palace. His remains were deposited in the Economic Society of Friends of the Country of Santiago de Compostela by Royal Order from 1886 to 1972.
