The Porta Maggiore and Tomb of Eurysaces the Baker, Rome, c1858. The Porta Maggiore (Larger Gate) is one of the eastern gates in the 3rd-century Aurelian Walls. Through the gate ran two ancient roads: the Via Praenestina and the Via Labicana. The unusual circular openings in the topmost storey of the tomb are now thought to represent kneading-basins or grain-measuring vessels. Jane Martha St. John (1801-1882) was an early English photographer who made over 100 photographs in the late 1850s when travelling with her husband in Italy.
