Henry II was mortally wounded during the tournament held in the Place des Vosges (Vosges Square) in Paris, on the occasion of the wedding of his daughter Elisabeth of Valois to King Philip II of Spain. Henry II fought against a Captain of the Scottish Guard, Gabriel de Lorges, Count of Montgomery, and was unintentionally wounded in the eye. Henry died a few days later, on 10 July 1599, as a result of the wound he had suffered. From "Vie Militaire et Religieuse au Moyen Age et à l'Epoque de la Renaissance", Paris, 1877.
