Peter III of Aragon in the arena at Bordeaux , 1283 (1890). In December 1282 Charles of Anjou, (1227-1285) challenged Peter III of Aragon, (1240-1285) to a duel. A judgement of God would take place in Bordeaux on 1 June 1283 to settle the war for the throne of Sicily. One hundred knights would accompany each side, under the supervision of the King of England. Charles of Anjou believed that Peter III would not attend, so he would claim victory, or if he did, the French army of his nephew, King Philip III of France, would capture him. Peter III sensed the trap and went to Bordeaux on the eve of the appointed date, disguised as a squire. He went to a notary in the city to certify his appearance and the ambush that was being prepared against him, and then left.
