Medieval torture scene: The Estrapade, or Question Extraordinary, 1541, (1878). Torture consisted of gradually tightening the prisoner's restraints by turning a wheel until a confession was extracted or his life was endangered. After an engraving in "Praxis Criminalis Persequendi" by J. Millaeus, published in Paris in 1541. From "Moeurs, usages et costumes au moyen-âge et à l'époque de la Renaissance" by Paul Lacroix, Paris, 1878.
