The landing of United States troops for land warfare in Cuba has been actually commenced...at the entrance to Santiago Harbour..., Admiral Sampson's main squadron...bombarded the forts and batteries from Friday to Sunday; and different vessels landed at several points of the coast large numbers of rifles, stores of ammunition and provisions, field-guns and shells, to aid the Cuban insurgents, collected by General Gomez, five thousand strong, for an attack on the town of Santiago.
