H.M.S. "Crescent," to be commanded by the Duke of York, 1898. 'The Duke of York [future King George V] is once more to be our sailor Prince. He is to be appointed to the command of H. M.S. Crescent, which is now being refitted at Portsmouth at a cost of £9000. The Crescent is a twin-screw cruiser of 7700 tons, of the first class, and was commissioned in 1895...The present is a fitting opportunity for the Duke to hoist his pennant on the Crescent, for this year marks the majority of H.R.H. as a sailor...for a great naval Power like ours, it is reassuring to think that our future King wall be able to deal with all matters of naval development from the point of view of actual knowledge, which always stands for so much.' From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
