Overend, one of the most valued artists of The Illustrated London News, the vivid accuracy of his treatment of all sorts of seafaring subjects, peaceful or warlike, long since gave him a place of his own in contemporary art; the late Aubrey Beardsley, died [of tuberculosis aged 25]...a mere boy in appearance, he nevertheless leaves behind him an impression on the fashions of art in England such as few have made in lives of long duration...he compelled admiration, even from those who felt least sympathy with his subjects, his methods of treatment, and particularly the expression of evil on the faces of his women - all of the decadence, master of a new school of black-and-white work; The Right Hon. John Thomas Ball, ex-Lord Chancellor of Ireland, Bencher of King's Inn, Queen's Advocate, Vicar-General of Armagh, Solicitor and Attorney General, Lord Chancellor of Ireland; The late Sir Henry Bessemer, engineer, inventor...His great hit was the discovery of a simple process for the conversion of pig-iron into steel, a discovery which reorganised the iron trade, effected an enormous economy in coal, added to the strength of steel, and increased the production of it from 50,000 to three million tons a year'.
