The Indian Frontier Rising - the Rifle-Thief: a night scene near Kohat, 1898. 'From a Sketch by Surgeon-Captain Cecil Stevens, 42nd Field Hospital, Tirah Field Force. One of the worst pests on the Indian Frontier is the rifle-thief, who is as crafty in his calling as he is assiduous in its application. His operations are by no means limited to the camps beyond the border, but in all frontier towns, and even in the garrison towns of northern India as far as Lucknow, he makes his presence felt. Rifles have, of course, a much greater value to the tribesmen than their actual cost price'. From "Illustrated London News", 1898.
