Self-portrait with Skull, c1645. Dutch painter Karel Slabbaert (1618-1654) depicts himself in an outfit trimmed with black lace, holding a paintbrush, with his hat a jaunty angle. The skull and the smoking candlestick are symbols of mortality. Slabbaert died in his mid-thirties, only about ten years after this picture was painted.
