Portrait of Isaac Commelin, 1669. Commelin (1598-1676) was a Dutch historian, a member of the vroedschap (city council) and a manager of a charity hospital, providing help to the sick and poor. On the wall behind him is a map of Amsterdam, with an allegorical figure representing the city depicted on a page of the book open on the desk next to him.
