The New Route to Caen: the steam-ship "Calvados", 1895. 'Normandy and Brittany are so delightful as resting-places for the tourist tired with the garish pleasures of crowded cities that one welcomes another means of access to this part of the French coast. Since May 1 there has been a new and regular steam-packet service between London, Newhaven, and Caen. It owes its origin to the enterprising London and Brighton Railway Company, and has already received extensive patronage. During the summer months there will be, doubtless, thousands who will take advantage of this opportunity of visiting the quaint town of Caen, Trouville, Rouen, and other picturesque spots within easy reach...The two steamers...are the CaIvados (named after the department in which Caen is situated) and the Trouville. Both the vessels are the handiwork of Messrs. Denny Brothers, Dumbarton. They carry 325 passengers, and are most admirably adapted for the comfort and pleasure of all. There is amidships an excellent promenade deck, and beneath it is the saloon, handsomely furnished. Electricity has been used throughout for lighting the vessel...There is, in fact, everything to inspire confidence in a safe and comfortable voyage'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
