Our Leading Academicians, painted by themselves: Sir John Everett Millais, Bart., R.A., 1895. 'Sir John Everett Millais was born at Southampton, 1829; spent his early years in the Channel Islands and France; obtained the medal of the Royal Academy in 1838, and two years later entered the Royal Academy schools, where he gained two silver medals. His first picture exhibited at the Royal Academy, 1846, "Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru," received gold medal; attached himself to the Pre-Raphaelite school for many years. A.R.A. 1853, R.A. 1864'.
