The Right Hon. James Abercromby, afterwards Lord Dunfermline - Speaker from 1835 to 1839, (1895). 'The Speakers of the Century. Since the beginning of the century there have been seven Speakers of the House of Commons, five of whom have occupied this exalted office during the Queen's reign. Mr. James Abercromby was also a lawyer, and came of a family distinguished by its honourable record. He was Judge-Advocate-General, Chief Baron of the Court of Exchequer in Scotland, Master of the Mint, and a member of the Cabinet. Some strong feeling having been excited by the action of Sir Charles Manners-Sutton, Mr. Abercromby was proposed for the Speakership as a rival to the latter, and was elected by 316 votes to 306'.
