The Right Hon. H. B. W. Brand - Speaker from 1872 to 1884, (1895). 'The Speakers of the Century. Since the beginning of the century there have been seven Speakers of the House of Commons, five of whom have occupied this exalted office during the Queen's reign. The Hon. Henry Bouverie William Brand, who was unanimously elected to the office of Speaker, came of a long lineage. He was the second son of the twenty-first Baron Dacre. It was during his occupancy of the Chair that many scenes of storm and stress in connection with the new developments of obstruction were enacted. On his retirement in 1884 he was created Viscount Hampden, and spent the remainder of his life for the most part at his country seat, Glynde, in Sussex'. From "Illustrated London News", 1895.
