Sketch for the Prince Consort Mounted on Horseback, c1859. This preparatory study for the portrait of Prince Albert reveals that initially Phillip had conceived an equestrian portrait, strongly reminiscent of van Dyck's Equestrian Portrait of Charles I, King of England with Seignior de St. Antoine of 1633 (Buckingham Palace, Royal Collections). Either Phillip or Prince Albert did not like this plan and Phillip finally settled on a much simpler composition.
