The Frog turns into a Prince - Illustration for 'The Frog Prince', c1874. For three nights the frog sleeps in the Princess' bed. However, on the third morning, to the astonishment of the Princess, the frog transforms into a handsome Prince. He explains that he was turned into a frog by a wicked fairy and that the Princess has succeeded in breaking the spell. All that remains is for the Prince to ask for her hand in marriage. Crane shows the Prince appearing out of a puff of smoke, with the metamorphosis of frog to prince appearing amidst the billows. Classical motifs decorate the Princess' bedstead, whilst the surrounding curtains suggest the influence of William Morris.
