A Scottish Policeman, 1941. This drawing was completed during the Second World War, when Cowie was Warden at Hospitalfield College of Art, Arbroath. It was commissioned by the War Artists' Advisory Committee who gathered together a body of images which could be used for propaganda purposes. The commissioned artists recorded their experiences of war and the people engaged in the war effort on the home front as well as on the front-line. The identity of James Cowie's Scottish Policeman is not recorded but the part which he played is remembered in this fine pastel drawing.
