Cecile, 1922. With her sultry, vampish air, Cecile is a modern, avant-garde woman. Yet her portrayal in profile with a daringly bared back may also reflect the influence of Ancient Egyptian art and fashion, made popular by the discoveries of Pharaohs’ Tombs during the 1920s. Cecile Walton was herself a talented painter, the daughter of ‘Glasgow Boy’ E.A. Walton and wife of the artist Eric Robertson. She was a close friend of Dorothy Johnstone and Anne Finlay and worked alongside them in Kirkcudbright. Later she moved to Edinburgh and is now associated with the ‘Edinburgh Group’ of artists.
