The Highwayman, ex. 1848. Scene in a mid 18th century stagecoach. A swarthy Dick Turpin-like character has held up the coach and is demanding money from the passengers. With terrified expressions, the coach party - including an elaborately uniformed officer - hand over their valuables, whilst opposite him a young clergyman reaches under his seat for his gun. Meanwhile, in the distance, a body hanging from gallows reveals the final outcome of the tale; justice prevails and the highwayman will receive his punishment.
