A Scene from Kabuki, 1825-1830. The actor's name, Bando Mitsugoro III (1775-1831), appears in the top space. The actor plays the role of a historical figure from the twelfth century, called Kajiwara Kagesue, who was known as a person of taste as well as a shogun (general). The design of plum blossoms and darts on his costume reminds us of an episode where Kagesue decorated his quiver with a bunch of plum blossoms in a war. The square mark in the bottom centre is the publisher's seal of Shimizuya, which ran a business in the Bunka-Bunsei period (1804-1830).
