Sainfoin, the Winner of the Derby: the preliminary canter, 1890. 'The result of the race for the Derby Stakes at the Epsom Spring Meeting on Wednesday, June 4, was announced in our last publication. The winning horse was Sir James Miller's Sainfoin, whose sire was Springfield, his dam being Sanda. He was ridden by Watts. Sir James Miller, who is to be congratulated on having won the Derby at his first attempt, is the more fortunate because he purchased Sainfoin a month or so ago from his joint owners, Sir Robert Jardine and Mr. John Porter, the Kingsclere trainer, who bought him for 550 guineas at the sale of her Majesty's yearlings bred in the Bushey Paddocks. It is a noteworthy fact, too, that although the Royal stud at Hampton Court has been in existence for many years, no winner of the Derby has ever been bred there before'.
