Sandstorm, Pays Dogon, Mali, 1990. The photographer had climbed the Bandiagara Escarpment in the Sahel, and having reached the plateau above, watched as the sky turned orange. Looking around her, she realised she could no longer see her companions. "Oh wow, a dust storm!, I thought. Images of people being swept away by strong winds filled my mind - fed by childhood memories of movies. Should I try and tie myself to a tree? I wondered. But my fears were groundless - despite the entire landscape around me being filled with tiny orange particles, there was very little wind, and in the event I didn't need to tie a scarf over my nose and mouth to keep out the dust".
