French Revolutionary Wars: Italian campaign - Battle of Valvasone or Tagliamento (16 March 1797). French troops crossing the Tagliamento River. The army of the French Republic led by Napoleon Bonaparte attacked the Austrian Habsburg forces under Archduke Charles, Duke of Teschen. The Austrian army fought a rearguard action against the French vanguard led by Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte at the Tagliamento river crossing, but was defeated and withdrew to the northeast.
