First Carlist War (1833-1840): The Lord Eliot Convention, 1845. On 27th and 28th April 1835, the treaty was signed in Asarta and Logroño between Tomás Zamalacárregui, Gerónimo Valdés, Lord Eliot and Lieutenant-Colonel Gurwood. The British diplomat Edward Granville Eliot travelled to the Basque provinces as a representative of the British government to reach an agreement between Carlists and Liberals that would allow the lives of prisoners of war to be respected.
