Death of General Duphot (1769-1797) in Rome on 28 December 1797, during a riot between Pontifical troops and French supporters, 1879. In the environs of the French legation, in the presence of Joseph Bonaparte. Pope Pius VI presented a formal apology to the French Directory the following day, but it was not accepted, and Napoleon used it as a pretext to invade Rome, abolish the Papal States and establish the Republic of Rome. From "History of the French Revolution" Volume I, 2nd part, 1879.
