Livingston Hopkins 'Hop'. Additional Info: Livingston Hopkins or ‘Hop’ of the Bulletin as he came to be known was born at Bellefontaine, Ohio, United States of America, in 1846. After gaining recognition in the US for his humorous illustrations and articles he was approached by WH Traill to come to Australia and work for The Bulletin whose slogan 'Australia for Australians' appealed to Livingstone Hopkins. In 1883 Livingstone Hopkins and his family arrived in Sydney. His social satire and jokes resulted in over 19,000 drawings making him the most popular of the Bulletin cartoonists. The Bulletin’s propaganda for Australian independence suited Hop’s philosophy and style. Shortly after arriving in Sydney, he visited Mosman and was so taken with the area that he rented land at Edwards Beach (Balmoral) and established the first artist’s camp in the area. As well as making significant contributions to Australia’s cultural life, Hopkins made valuable contributions to Mosman where he lived in Fernham, Curaghbeena Street (now 136 Raglan Street) from 1890 until his death in 1927. One such contribution was designing the official Mosman seal which was only slightly changed in 1939.
