Mr. Joseph May and His Sons, Thomas Charles, Joseph and John, 1780. Joseph May and his wife Mary were born in Portugal where they lived until the 1770s. One of the sons is pointing to Portugal on the globe. The Mays were connected to successful Lisbon-based wine merchant families. Swiss painter Angelica Kauffman had a successful career in London and Rome. From 1769 until 1782, she was an annual exhibitor with the Royal Academy of Art in London.
