Murat Defeating the Turkish Army at Aboukir, (c1805). Alternative title: The Battle of Aboukir. The painting was commissioned by French Army officer Joachim Murat who is the focal point of the picture. The Battle of Aboukir was fought on 25 July 1799 at Abu Qir in Egypt, during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. Murat's cavalry chased and killed almost every Turkish soldier in sight as they attempted to retreat to their ships.
