Dinner at the Savage Club to Mr. Toole on his departure to Australia, 1890. '"One of my old friend Toole's little jokes." "My young friend here has known me ever since I was a little boy." Sir Somers Vine, Sir A. K. Rollit. Mr. J. L. Toole. Mr. W. Rignold. Mr. G. A. Henty [who presided], Sir F. Abel. Mr. J. L. Toole was entertained...by the Savage Club, in the fine room of their new premises in Adelphi-terrace. The company at table numbered a hundred and twenty. Among those present were...Dr. Lennox Browne; Messrs. T. Woolner, R.A., S. J. Solomon. H. Vos, J. Fulleylove, H. Blackburn, E. J. Goodman, Walter Wren, Bronson Howard, Spielman, J. K. Jerome, W. J. Jeaffreson, D. Godfrey, C. Collette, [and] W. Tegetmeier...In returning thanks when his health was drunk, Mr. Toole promised to tell the steward - with whom he expected to spend most of the voyage to Australia - what good fellows the Savages were...He liked acting, and meant to go on acting, though many inducements had been held out to him to leave the stage. There was great cheering...A couple of recitations which he gave later on were among the best of the evening, which was certainly not lacking in musical and dramatic talent. It was one of the liveliest of the Savage festivities'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
