Senhor Barros Gomes, the Portuguese Minister of Foreign Affairs, 1890. 'Senhor Barros Gomes, in his lengthy reply to Lord Salisbury's despatch on the claims of Portugal to vast territorial dominions in the interior of Africa, recites many obscure historical incidents extending over two centuries and a half, beginning with a pretended cession of "the ancient empire of Monomotapa" - probably a fabulous empire - to a Portuguese Governor of Mozambique in 1630'. From "Illustrated London News", 1890.
