Mr. Sheriff Smith, 1883. Engraving from a photograph by the London Stereoscopic Company. 'Mr. Clarence Smith is a son of the late Rev. Dr. Gervase Smith, who was President of the Wesleyan Conference; and he is nephew to the late Dr. Edward Smith, physician to the Local Government Board. Born in 1849, he was educated at the Kingswood and Woodhouse-grove School for Wesleyan ministers' sons. He is a member of the Stock Exchange, an active Liberal politician, one of the committee of managers of the Haverstock-hill and Alexandra Orphanages, and honorary secretary of the Strangers' Friend Society. He is also a representative of the Third London District in the Wesleyan Conference, one of the Wesleyan Schools Commission, and of the Aldershott Soldiers' Home Committee. He is senior partner in the firm of Clarence and Gervase Smith and Co., stock and share brokers, Queen Victoria-street'. From "Illustrated London News", 1883.
