Unveiling the German National Monument at Rüdesheim: presenting address to the Emperor, 1883. 'The grand ceremony of dedicating the statue of "Germania," the National Monument to commemorate the victories of 1870 and 1871 [ie the Franco-Prussian War], and the establishment of the German Empire, was performed by the Emperor, King William [Wilhelm] I. of Prussia...Fraulein Marie Heyl, of Wiesbaden, delivered an address written by Herr Ritterhaus, whose daughter, as also Professor Schilling's, the sculptor of the monument, was among the chosen seven...The Minister, Count Eulenburg, delivered an address describing the origin and execution of the monument...Our Illustrations are from Sketches by Mr J.
