Charles Swart was appointed the 9th Governor-General of the Union of South Africa in 1959. Following the 1960 referendum on the Republic, in which white voters decided to sever their remaining ties with the British monarchy, Swart became the first State President of the Republic of South Africa on May 31, 1961.
