Railway Travel in South Africa, c1900?. 'There are usually not many incidents to relieve the monotony of railway travel in long journeys through South Africa, except at one or two places en route to Bulawayo or Johannesburg. As in England urchins follow coaches and carriages along country roads, throwing "cartwheels" and clamouring for coppers, so in South Africa, at various points on the railway, several swarthy little natives, clad in rags, or sometimes with no clothes on at all, wait and shout for backsheesh or scraps of food thrown out by passengers, who take pleasure in witnessing the excited scramble which inevitably takes place'.
