'Arms for Russia', British poster, World War II, c1941-c1945. "A great convoy of British merchant ships escorted by Soviet fighter planes sails into Mumansk harbour with vital supplies for the Red Army". Britain and the United States sent a total of 78 convoys carrying supplies to the Soviet Union via the Arctic route between 1941 and 1945. The route was dangerous, with bad weather and constant threat of attack from German aircraft, U-boats and surface vessels, and the British lost 85 merchant vessels and 16 Royal Navy ships on the convoys.
