Presenting the Fowler to the Fowler Brotherhood (Sketch), 1876. According to legend in 1565, King Sigismund II presented the Fowler Brotherhood of Krakow with the Silver Fowler bird, The paramilitary organisation was set up to defend the city from attacks by enemy armies. Clad in Renaissance costumes, the fraternity members are huddled around the Jagiellonian monarch, who is presenting the gift. The solemnity of the event is added to by the figures of halberdiers flanking the solemn scene.
