'There are nearly three hundred volcanoes on the globe which are believed to be still active...Volcanoes vary in size from the little mud-mounds of the Caspian, two or three feet in diameter, to Bahama, which is 23,914 feet in height...the crater of Askja, in Iceland, has a circumference of nearly eighteen miles...Sahama (23,914 ft.), [is] the loftiest volcano in the list...Chimborazo (21,420 ft.) is either a dormant or extinct volcano...Cotopaxi (19,662 ft.)...has frequently been in eruption...Antisana (19,137 ft.)...erupted in 1590 and in 1728...Klintschewskaya (15,760 ft.) is a volcano of Kamtschatka...Mauna Loa (13,760 ft.)...Kilauea is situated at a low point (4000 ft. above the sea), on the flanks of Mauna Loa...Fusiyama [sic] (13,080 ft.)...Teneriffe is one vast volcanic mountain, and the peak (12,782 ft.) exceeds Etna in height by more than a thousand feet...Mount Etna (10,840 ft.), [is] the most celebrated volcano in the world...Vesuvius (4165 ft.)...Hekla (5108 ft.)...Stromboli (3090 ft.), although a small volcano, is...in perpetual activity...Vulcano (1601ft.), a member of the same group of Lipari Islands...Monte Nuovo (440 ft.)'.
