The Duke of Albany (Prince Leopold), 1881. Engraving from a photograph taken '...by the Electric Light Process of Mr. Van der Weyde...his Royal Highness Prince Leopold George Duncan Albert, recently created Duke of Albany, Earl Clarence, and Baron Arklow, took his seat among the Peers of the United Kingdom. [He]...is the youngest but one...of the nine children born to her Majesty...He...is well known to have inherited a large share of his father's taste for literature and art, and of the intellectual habits of studious reflection, by which Prince Albert was so highly distinguished. A certain lack of physical robustness has debarred Prince Leopold from those pursuits of the English sportsman for which his elder brothers have shown much predilection, and he has...not yet undertaken any distant travels. There is good hope, nevertheless, that his health in future years will be such as to enable him to bear an active part in the offices of social usefulness for which he seems peculiarly fit...The title of Duke of Albany...has been revived, by the Queen's good pleasure, in favour of this esteemed young Prince. We trust that he will bear it through a long and happy life'. Leopold, a haemophiliac, died aged 30, apparently from a cerebral haemorrhage. From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
