Burning a condemned slave dhow at Funzi, Pemba Island, 1881. 'Another of the Sketches by our Special Artist at Zanzibar, Mr. J. Bell, is now engraved...[It] represents the burning of a condemned slave dhow at Funzi, in the isle of Pemba,...[Zanzibar]'. Captain Charles James Brownrigg, senior Royal Navy officer on the East African station for the suppression of the contraband slave trade, was killed by Arab slave traders at Pemba, Zanzibar.
