The late Mr. John Gould, F.R.S., 1881. Engraving from a photograph by Maull and Co. of an '...eminent scientific ornithologist. A native of Lyme, in Dorsetshire, he was born in 1804, and at an early age showed a strong taste for the study of nature. In boyhood he spent most of his time under the care of the late Mr. J. T. Alton, at the Royal Gardens, Windsor, where he soon acquired a taste for botany and floriculture...In 1830 Mr. Gould became possessed of a fine collection of birds from the hill countries of India, and in the following year he proceeded to illustrate the more important species in a work which he published under the title of "A Century of Birds from the Himalaya Mountains"...In 1838 Mr. Gould paid a visit to Australia for the purpose of studying the natural productions of that country, the result of which was the publication of "The Birds of Australia," a work in seven folio volumes, containing figures and descriptions of upwards of 600 species. Besides the above, Mr. Gould published a work on the "Mammals of Australia," a "Monograph of the Ramphastidae," a "Monograph of the Trogonidae," a "Monograph of the Odontophorinae, or Partridges of America," [and] a " Monograph of the Trochilidae, or Humming Birds".'
