The East African Slave Trade: examination of the captured slaves in the British Consul-General's Court at Zanzibar - from a sketch by our special artist, Mr. J. Bell, 1881. 'Officer who captured the Slave Dhow. Colonel Miles, Acting Consul-General. The late Captain Brownrigg, R.N...Much regret was felt at the news received by the Admiralty through a telegram from Zanzibar, reporting that on the 3rd December Captain C. J. Brownrigg, of H.M.S. London, in a steam-pinnace, with ten men ran alongside a dhow full of slaves, flying French colours, and that, after a fierce resistance by the Arab crew, Captain Brownrigg...[and three others] were killed...The London...is the head-quarters of the naval squadron for the suppression of the slave trade there...over five hundred slaves [have been] liberated since the date of the ship's commission, March, 1878... Captain Brownrigg received twenty-one wounds, and was at length shot through the heart. The dhow, which was full of slaves...has since been found empty...In the Engraving on our front page the late Captain Brownrigg appears sitting at the table, where Colonel Miles, Acting Consul-General, with his secretary and Arab interpreter, and other official assistants, is conducting the examination...'.
