The late Mr. C. Robinson, artist, 1881. 'We record, with sincere regret, the death of this artist...after a long illness. As a draughtsman on wood, Mr. Robinson was employed on this paper almost continuously for the last eighteen years, and was always prompt, ready, and reliable. His freedom and facility were remarkable, and were often called into play in the production of spectacular scenes...Charles Robinson was born in London in 1840. He received his first lessons in drawing from his father, a wood-engraver, descended from the famous Newcastle school of Bewick. At the age of fifteen he was apprenticed to Messrs Maclure, Macdonald, and Macgregor, the well-known firm of lithographers, of the City of London, where he made great progress under the able care and guidance of Mr. A. Maclure, sen., at the same time being an industrious student at the Finsbury School of Art and Lee's life classes. Shortly after the expiration of his apprenticeship he became connected with illustrated journalism, and so continued until his last illness, he also worked assiduously as a book illustrator, his last drawings of this kind being a set of pen-and-ink sketches, to be reproduced by process, illustrating Mr. G. A. Sala's "America Revisited".' From "Illustrated London News", 1881.
