Amphitheatre of El Jem, Tunisia, 2009. The Amphitheatre of El Jem in the modern-day city of El Djem, Tunisia, was built c238 AD in Thysdrus, in the Roman province of Africa Proconsularis. El Jem was built for spectator events, and the estimated capacity is 35,000. It is one of biggest amphitheatres as well as being one of the best preserved Roman stone ruins in the world. It is listed by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and is unique in Africa.
