Spanish-American War (1898): Spanish cruiser "Reina Mercedes", 1898. War between Spain and the United States as a result of the US intervention in the Cuban War of Independence. The "Reina Mercedes" (1892) was a first-class iron-hulled ship which was converted into a floating battery to defend the harbour entrance at Santiago de Cuba.
