Head of the colossal statue "Liberty Illuminating the World", Paris Exposition, 1878. The head, presented at the Champ de Mars in Paris, was to serve as a lighthouse in New York Harbour. The sculpture, a gift to the United States from the people of France, was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel.
