King Richard III (1452-1485) holds a bloody sword, the dead body of King Henry VI lies on the ground. Having become convinced that his father was the Devil in disguise, British artist Richard Dadd killed him with a knife. He was committed to the criminal department of Bethlem psychiatric hospital (also known as Bedlam). There and subsequently at the newly created Broadmoor Hospital, he was able to continue to paint. Dadd probably had paranoid schizophrenia. Here he depicts a scene from Shakespeare's "Richard III".
